FAQ

How can I be a Good News family this year?

Families who wish to be considered for The Good News of Christmas must be nominated by a caseworker in the following counties: Adams, Brown, Pike, Hancock, Clark, Lewis, Shelby, Monroe, Marion, and Ralls. This is a once in a lifetime gift. Families who have already been a recipient or are looking for assistance for their children for Christmas can contact the following:

Families who wish to be considered for Good News need to talk with the counselors at their children’s schools or caseworkers at agencies from which they receive services (Department of Human Services, Quincy Housing Authority, Transitions, etc.) The process to identify Good News families begins in September/October of each year.

How can I adopt a Good News family?

The United Way of Adams County is coordinating the adoption process for the Good News cases. Individuals, families, churches, businesses and civic groups are invited to adopt a family and have the opportunity to shop for gifts for the children and adults in the home. Please contact Reggie at 217-224-1223 to adopt a family and make their Christmas one filled with happiness and joy.

How can I volunteer for the Good News program?

Volunteers are needed to shop for families, sort donated gifts and wrap/label presents. If you are interested in serving as a Good News volunteer, call Reggie Freel at 217-224-1223, or stop by the Good News Volunteer Center, which will be open Nov. 27th – Dec. 15th in the Quincy Town Center next to Maurices. Hours will be 5:00p-9:00p Monday through Thursday, Fridays from 12:00p-3:00p, and 1:00p-5:00p on Saturdays and Sundays. Volunteers are a big part of the success of the Good News program. Call to see how you can lend your hands to make a difference.

How can I donate big ticket items such as used appliances/furniture?

The Good News program is not equipped to accept used appliances or furniture. If you have gently used furniture to donate to those in need, please contact The Salvation Army for pick-up at 217-224-5998.

How can I donate my services to a family in need (car repair, home repair, dental, etc.)?

The United Way of Adams County is coordinating the fulfillment of Big Ticket requests such as needs for services. Please contact Reggie at 217-224-1223 to see how your skills can be a blessing for a Good News family.

How can I donate money to the Good News campaign?

Monetary support for the Good News of Christmas campaign can be sent to United Way of Adams County at 936 Broadway Street, Quincy, IL 62301, or can be dropped off at the Quincy Town Center's location just west of the fountain court while the Volunteer Center is open. If you want your gift to be directed to a specific family, please note the Good News case number on your check and it will be used to purchase items for that family. Contributions are tax-deductible and gifts of all sizes are welcome. Every donation to the Good News campaign has a direct impact on the families served.

Case #1: A Young Mother’s Journey to Provide for Her Children

In a quiet corner of our community, a young single mother cares for her four children. Her story is one of love, sacrifice, and unwavering strength as she navigates the challenges of raising four beautiful children – a 10-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy, and a precious 1-year-old girl.

Amid the laughter and chaos that fill their home, there lies an underlying concern that shadows their daily lives. One of her children battles health issues that demand countless trips to St. Louis – a journey that stretches over two and a half hours each way. It's a journey filled with anxiety and hope, as they visit doctors and undergo surgeries in pursuit of a healthier future.

The family car, unreliable, has forced the young mother to turn to her own mother for help, borrowing her vehicle to ensure her sick child receives the care they so desperately need. Major repairs beckon for the family car – the tie rods and tires, essentials for safety, need replacement.

Her life is a balancing act. A part-time job is her anchor, allowing her the flexibility to tend to her child's health needs. But this lifeline comes with its own sacrifices – a reduced income that strains her ability to meet the monthly bills that only seem to increase.

Family members do step in to offer their helping hands, ensuring that the children are cared for and loved even when the mother's responsibilities weigh heavily. This holiday season, you can make their path a little brighter and add a touch of joy to this family’s journey.

Case #2: A Family’s Journey of Challenges and Hope

In the heart of our community, a family of six faces unrelenting challenges in their manufactured home. Despite the mother’s hard work and improved job, they struggle to heat their home and mend a broken air conditioner. Monthly bills weigh them down, without the safety net of food assistance.

Still their determination shines. The mother works full time while pursuing a nursing license for a better future. The father, limited by health issues, searches for suitable employment. With one vehicle too costly to repair, they share an aging vehicle that reminds them daily of their financial constraints.

Blessed with four children, one with autism requires additional care; a 10-year-old girl, an 8-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl a 4-year-old boy. The approaching holiday season casts a shadow as gifts and a festive season seems out of reach. A new table for family togetherness, storage containers to organize clothing and toys, household and personal hygiene products are included on their wish list in addition to the gift of hope for stability and an improved future.

The next son battles ADHD, a learning disability and severe anxiety. Despite his struggles, his heart is a soft spot for anything cats and play as he enters the community of Roblox or Minecraft. Both boys receive therapy and counseling, a testament to their mother’s unwavering commitment to their growth and development.

At only 4-years of age, the youngest loves all things “girlie”. Her mother finds joy in watching her daughter twirl about at play, wishing for Barbie dolls and using her imagination to express her love of unicorns and rainbows. These moments consistently bring forth smiles for both of them.

Balancing roles as a loving mother, hardworking employee and ambitious student with grace, this head of household hopes one of her part-time jobs will become full time, a glimmer of stability. Budgeting is a tightrope, with a broken microwave making mealtime a bit more challenging and a van needing continuous repairs. She would love a wall clock with numbers her children can read, rugs to warm and soften their bedrooms this winter and a couple of table lamps to chase away the darkness of night.

Case #5: A Table of Love for a Family of Six

In our community lives a family of six, each with their own battles to face, drawing strength from each other. Dad works tirelessly and full-time to support the medical needs of his three children. Mom is the family anchor, her days filled with countless hours of trips in and out of town for various medical concerns for all three of their children. Fortunately, grandmother has moved in to assist; but she is limited by her own health needs. This Mom dreams of the simple things of daily life, such as sturdy plates and silverware, soft bath towels and cleaning essentials. She looks forward to the beacon of hope their therapy puppy will be for all of them.

Their oldest, a 13-year-old girl with Autism and panic disorder, faces her own challenges. She finds comfort in books, body lotions and bubble baths. Her big wish is a fun, fuzzy chair to cozy up in while exploring magical worlds hidden in the pages of books.

The middle child, an 8-year-old boy, is a bundle of energy and curiosity. Despite continuous monitoring for hypoglycemia, he is enthusiastic about board games, card games and science experiment kits. Mention the word "Nerf" anything and see his eyes sparkle with excitement.

Their youngest, a 3-year-old boy, faces the challenges of Cerebral Palsy, unable to stand or walk. His spirit and laughter shines with his love of music toys, Eric Carle books and anything Cocomelon.

As Christmas approaches, this family wishes for the warmth of togetherness around a large kitchen table where all six of them can gather, sharing meals, stories, and family time, a place where their love can shine brighter than the hardships they face.

Case #6: Christmas Pillows of Hope

The challenge of raising four children on your own is this mother’s life. Their father, who struggled to be present for his family, was on track to return home when he passed away. The heartbreak was compounded by the mother’s undiagnosed chronic and painful health issues that make full-time work difficult to do. Fortunately, a diagnosis and treatment were found with physical therapy to help her regain her strength. This newfound hope inspires her to dream of returning to school for medical training, aiming to help others navigate their health challenges.

The children, ages 4 to 13 years, require both physical and emotional energy. They have health concerns as well. One child has Hypotonia and Sleep Apnea, requiring physical and occupational therapy. Another child struggles with Sensory Processing Disorder, but the counseling that provided improvement is on hold due to school scheduling. The youngest has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Thankfully the children’s grandmother watches them when Mom works, but they are quite a handful for her.

There is little room in the budget for extras. This makes the approaching holiday season a daunting prospect. Supportive pillows for a good night’s sleep would be a welcome gift for everyone in this family. A working vacuum to keep the floors clean, a toaster, microwave oven, and pots and pans would make household tasks easier. True luxuries when you don’t have them.

The 13-year-old daughter would love the basic comfort of personal care items, slippers, and snow boots. The 10-year-old son loves all things Pokémon, as well as Legos and Nerf toys. The youngest boys, ages 4 and 5, enjoy bath time toys, Scooby-Doo, the enchanting world of Encanto, and Playdough.
